Over 100 Years of Mohawk

Over 100 years ago, in August 1920, the Mohawk brand was born. One of the crown jewels in the flooring industry, the brand has a rich history.
The creation of the Mohawk brand is a culmination of a 70-year story of talented artisans, hard-working dreamers, family tragedy and businesses brought together through unexpected loss…and a river that ran through it all.
The Budding U.S. Carpet Industry
In 1875, William Shuttleworth, a gifted English weaver, and his four sons – John, James, Walter and Herbert – sailed for the United States with 14 hand looms and set up a facility in the Hudson River Valley.
William Shuttleworth’s life was unexpectantly cut short, and, in 1878, his sons relocated their fledgling business to an empty factory adjacent to the Mohawk River in the East End of Amsterdam, New York, a city where the U.S. carpet industry had begun to emerge.

An Iconic Brand Begins
In 1920, the merger of two major carpet manufacturers, Shuttleworth Brothers Company and McCleary Wallin and Crouse, required a new name. The most prominent geographic feature in Amsterdam is the Mohawk River, which provided water for dyeing yarn, energy for mills and a means of transporting goods via tributaries and canals. The Mohawk River inspired the new business name: Mohawk Carpet Mills.
With that, the iconic Mohawk brand entered American flooring lexicon. Forged from a merger between two successful businesses, Mohawk carpets and rugs quickly established a reputation for elegant, innovative design and exceptional customer service.
Mohawk’s Transformation
These values remain hallmarks of the brand 100-plus years later – even after going public in 1992. During the past two decades, Mohawk has transformed its business from an American carpet manufacturer to the world’s largest flooring company with operations in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Europe, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand and the United States.
