Multi-family, senior living, condominiums, retirement communities, and other spaces that provide more than one use within a building or development area offer unique challenges. Each is designed differently using a variety of flooring materials to address ergonomics, acoustics, indoor air quality, durability, and cleanability.
Starnet Commercial Flooring recently revealed the fourth of several Starnet Design Awards winners for 2021. Now in its 23rd year, the annual competition honors the outstanding projects completed by the membership in partnership with the architects, designers and Starnet aligned manufacturing partners. On center stage is the Starnet Flooring Contractor Network’s professionalism to flawlessly execute the best possible outcomes. As leading contract flooring experts, the Starnet network annually performs more than $500 million dollars in the segment throughout the United States and Canada. Multi-family ($350M) and senior-assisted living ($150M) command the largest share in the segment.
An elite panel of architects and designers generously shared their talent and expertise in this year’s judging. They included Andrea Hanson, AIA, WELL AP, principal, architect, licensed interior designer, Dekker/Perich/Sabatini; Alison Woolf | LEED AP associate principal, design director, Huntsman Architectural Group; Cecelia Baumann, Senior Interior Design Student, Savannah College of Art and Design, the University of Creative Careers
Old Chicago Post Office
The Gold in Mixed-Use-Developments was awarded to Starnet Member Diverzify for the company’s work at Old Chicago Post Office located in Chicago, Illinois.
Spanning 2.5 million square-feet, the reimagined Old Chicago Post Office is a triumph in urban renewal. The massive building recently underwent an $800 million renovation after sitting empty for several decades—the largest historic redevelopment in American history. Every crack, crevice and hole had to be located, repaired, and brought to historic-appropriate appearance. As a historical landmark, the restoration also had to retain original design characteristics and aesthetics. While most of the existing floor was concrete, work also included repairing and replacing tile, carpet and wood in event and workspaces.
“The installation team was able to restore the unique character of this grand space, bringing the building back to life by working with the existing flooring,” said Design Awards Judge Andrea Hanson, AIA, WELL AP, Principal, Architect, Licensed Interior Designer, Dekker/Perich/Sabatini. “There’s something to be said for the dedication here,” she added. Judge Cecelia Baumann, Senior Interior Design Student, Savanah College of Art and Design added, “They embraced the flaws of the structure and showcased the challenges of the space.” “It’s beautifully done and incredibly impressive,” added Alison Woolf, LEED AP Associate Principal, Design Director, Huntsman Architectural Group.
