Cathey Gundlach, vice president of retail merchandising for CCA Global Partners, shares trends in flooring from the Carpet One Floor & Home’s Beautiful Design Made Simple magazine Winter Edition.

Interior Design Trend: Moody Drama

Moody drama calls forth rich, luxurious palettes of jewel tones with deep navy blues and forest greens complemented by oil paintings in antique frames and floral wallpaper. Think of a room you might find in an upscale, historic European inn. When it comes to flooring, this trend will be seen in dark-stained hardwood floors with parquet installation style.

Interior Design Trend: Return to Noir

Consumers will increasingly incorporate traditional dark palettes with touches of matte black throughout room details. The Return to Noir trend seeks to bring character into home design with sweeping curtains, arched mirrors, and lavish chandeliers. We’ll see dark wood floors and harlequin pattern or checkerboard pattern in area rugs and tile flooring.

Interior Design Trend: Earth Tones

We’re going to see a return of earth-tones and nature-inspired hues in interiors. Think earthy color palettes with rustic accents in brick and terracotta clay, pinks and caramel brown.

Interior Design Trend: Organic Shapes

Wall treatments that showcase texture and dimension paired with organic linens

create a calming, relaxed atmosphere. Whether you incorporate organic shapes in furniture, lighting, rugs, or artwork, these shapes can establish unique focal points and eye-catching elements.

Interior Design Trend: Cozy Home

A few years ago, hygge style was everywhere. This trend has continued to morph into an ongoing design aesthetic inspired by the coziness of cable knit sweaters and soft throw blankets. Plush white carpets that sink like clouds beneath bare feet are the perfect flooring to complement this trend.

Interior Design Trend: Concrete Industrial

An unfinished look is key to incorporating the concrete industrial trend. Think natural stone tile, exposed brick and raw wood. For floors, opt for polished, raw or micro topped concrete floors.

Interior Design Trend: Spa-Like Bathrooms

Bringing spa-like retreats and resort-style elements into the home has become an increasingly popular trend for consumers so that every day feels like vacation. Be on the lookout for spa-like features, especially in bathrooms, with steam showers and deep soak tubs. For flooring, watch for natural, organic materials like stone tile layered with luxuriously soft area rugs in calming palettes.
