New to the flooring industry, the National Association of Floor Covering Technicians (NAFCT) has entered the industry—and society—at a time where technology is essential, ingenuity is paramount and diversity and inclusion are strongly encouraged. With that, the organization is making a concerted effort to do its part in not only diversifying itself as it works to improve education, training and communication within the flooring installation industry, but to promote diversity and inclusion within the industry as well.
“In starting a new organization, we felt it was important to make a crystal-clear statement that the National Association of Floor Covering Technicians (NAFCT) is for everyone,” said Paul Pleshek, NAFCT executive director and co-founder. “NAFCT is excited to welcome individuals from all backgrounds to participate, teach and learn.”
With 98.7% of carpet and tile installers and finishers identifying as male, and 41.2% identifying as White Non-Hispanic—as reported by Data USA in 2018—numbers support NAFCT’s desire to encourage diversity within its self and the installation industry.
“As with most industries, there is always room for improvement,” said Sonny Callaham, co-founder and chairman. “The flooring industry welcomes anyone that works hard, embraces the trade and strives for excellence.”
In order to attract and properly educate installers both in and outside of the industry, Callaham says it is NAFCT’s responsibility as an industry organization to have input and guidance from a diverse group in order to best implement programs that will reach the most people and attract individuals that may not have previously considered a career path in the flooring industry.
“We recognize the importance of learning from one another and NAFCT will strive to create an environment where all members are inspired to share their passion, skills, experiences and ideas to enhance resources and education for the flooring industry,” said Sarah Fike, NAFCT board member and secretary.
Solidifying its efforts, NAFCT has released a Diversity Statement, which in part states that: “NAFCT will work to ensure that this commitment extends to everyone, and that the flooring industry benefits from the qualities and perspectives of the fullest diversity of professionals now and into the future.”
A lofty goal, NFACT plans to accomplish this and other initiatives outlined in its diversity and mission statements by partnering with industry experts, manufacturers and other flooring associations to provide accessible, affordable, advanced training and certification programs. “As outlined in our Mission Statement, NAFCT will enhance inter-industry communication and cooperation through joint committees, task forces and partnership with other trade associations,” Fike said.
The benefit of that? Unique perspectives that are sure to enhance opportunities, boost innovation and improve the industry’s ability to effectively serve the community, says the organization’s founders.
